With Trevor Linden set to announce his retirement today I figured it would be appropriate to count down the top 10 Vancouver Canucks of all time. The Canucks might not have the history of one of the Original Six clubs, but their nearly 40 years in the league have seen some great players don a Canuck uniform, and are still remembered fondly by old timers who've been watching the club since day one. Will Linden make this esteemed list of the top 10 greatest Canucks? Read on to find out.

10 - Roberto Luongo

Some fans might argue that this guy has not been with the club long enough to be considered one of the top 10 Vancouver Canucks of all time. They would have a point, but I don't think anyone would argue that this guy is the best ever to don the pads for the Canucks, and he has single-handedly been responsible for the bulk of the team's wins over the past 2 seasons. Give this guy a bit more scoring help, and he could very well bring the Canucks the Stanley Cup. In his first season he set a club record for wins in a single season and was a finalist for both the Vezina and Hart trophies.

9 - Todd Bertuzzi

Another choice that is sure to be controversial, yet despite the Steve Moore incident, and the dark cloud surrounding it that eventually saw Bertuzzi exit Vancouver, few people would argue that Big Bert was one of the most dominant, most entertaining players in the history of the franchise. His huge size, and his soft hands made him a consistent threat to score, and his chemistry with linemate Markus Naslund made the duo one of the deadliest in the league for several seasons.

8 - Harold Snepsts

Anyone who attended a Canucks game in the late 70s or early 80s probably chanted, “Haaarrrroooollllldddd!” at some point. Though not an offensive star, Snepsts was a tower of strength on the Canuck blue line, hitting first and asking questions later. He is still one of the Canucks most popular players of all time, and certainly one of the top 10 greatest Vancouver Canucks.

7 - Kirk McLean

Though the Canucks have been known throughout their history for having woeful goaltending, about once a decade they seem to get the right guy in between the pipes. Such was the case in the 90s, when Kirk McLean was tending the net for the club. Captain Kirk was one of the last true standup goalies to play the game, employing it with great success even though the bulk of his peers had switched to the more popular butterfly style. McLean racked up over 200 wins during his time with the club, and the pinnacle of his success came during the 1994 playoffs, where his stellar play led the team to game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, where they narrowly missed glory in a heart-breaking 3-2 to the New York Rangers.

6 - Thomas Gradin

This smooth-skating Swede was a key component of one of the best lines in hockey in the early 1980s. Playing alongside Curt Fraser and captain Stan Smyl, Gradin provided the finesse to go along with the grit of his linemates. He was a consistent scorer, averaging more than a point a game between 1979 and 1984. His contributions were a key reason the Canucks made it to the 1982 Stanley Cup finals, and he deserves his spot on the list of the top 10 Vancouver Canucks of all time.

5 - Richard Brodeur

Speaking of the 1982 Stanley Cup finals, despite the efforts of Gradin and others, there is no way the Canucks would have made it anywhere near as they did that year if not for the stellar play of King Richard. His exploits during that playoff run were so legendary they even spawned a song. He spent 8 memorable seasons with the Canucks, and may never have recaptured the same glory, but his dominant performance that gave Canuck fans the first sniff of success they'd ever had is reason alone to consider him one of the greatest Canucks ever.

4 - Markus Naslund

Markus has been much maligned over the past couple of seasons for his failure to put up big numbers to match the big dollars he is being payed. However, despite his recent struggles, there can be little argument that this soft-spoken team captain is one of the most skilled players the franchise has ever boasted. He is the all time franchise leader in goals and points. He is the only Canuck besides Pavel Bure (Calder) to ever win a major NHL award, capturing the Lester Pearson trophy in 2003, as the players' pick as the league's best player.

3 - Stan Smyl

“Steamer” was surely the most popular player in the history of the franchise before Linden came along to give him some competition for that title. When compiling the list of the top 10 Canucks of all time, this tireless worker was the first player that jumped to mind. His number 12 is the only number the Canucks have retired in their history, and up until a few years ago, Smyl was the club's all time leader in most offensive categories, and wore the C as team captain for 8 seasons.

2 - Pavel Bure

It didn't take the Russian Rocket long to serve notice he was going to be Vancouver's very first superstar. He electrified fans in his very first game, making several exciting end to end rushes that showed his incredible speed and stick handling ability. Though he didn't score in that first game, it wasn't very long before the goals started to come in bunches, and that scoring prowess earned him the Calder trophy as the rookie of the year. The Russian Rocket really launched the next 2 seasons, however. He became the first Canuck in team history to record 50 goals in a single season in his sophomore year, actually hitting an even 60. His third year he duplicated the feat, pouring in 60 more during the regular season and adding another 16 in the playoffs, during the Canucks' incredible 1994 Stanley Cup final run. He is easily the most exciting player ever to wear a Canuck jersey, and many would have him at the number 1 spot on their list of the top 10 Vancouver Canucks of all time.

1 - Trevor Linden

Trevor Linden is the greatest Canuck ever. I'm not just saying that because he is retiring today. This former Canuck captain has been an inspirational leader for the team for the better part of 2 decades now. He is the consummate Canuck, and has done everything for the team, including keeping his silence when forced to watch from the press box. There is no classier player in the sport of hockey, and he has been a true role model for young players around the league. But this list is not a mere popularity contest. Linden has put up the numbers throughout his career to justify his selection to the top spot on this list. He is the Canucks' all time leader in games played, and until Naslund recently passed him, held the club records for goals, assists and points. He will leave a gaping void with his retirement, much like he did when the Canucks unwisely traded him back in 1998.

Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings Show Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers What a Mistake They Made for the Second Time This Year. It was in Green Bay Made it Even Better

Friday, November 20th, 2009

At this point, even with the win over Chicago, a lot of folks are less than optimistic about the 49ers playoff chances.  The Cardinals win yesterday certainly did not help the 49ers divisional chances, but plenty of other action had a big impact on the playoff race.  Our man urnext will be around later today with a comprehensive review, but I thought I'd take a look at yesterday's results in terms of the 49ers playoff picture.

Given how bunched up things are at this point, it's probably too early to make any decent conclusions.  At the same time, with the 49ers just over halfway through their season, this can also work as a de facto halfway point look ahead.  At this point the wildcard standings are as follows (not factoring in division leaders):

Philadelphia Eagles (5-4)
NY Giants (5-4)
Green Bay Packers (5-4)
Atlanta Falcons (5-4)
San Francisco 49ers (4-5)
Carolina Panthers (4-5)
Chicago Bears (4-5)

What makes this especially interesting?  The 49ers have road games against two of the teams ahead of them.  Just as helpful is the fact that the 49ers are currently 4-2 in conference, which is tied for the best conference mark among these seven teams (conference tiebreaker is the second tiebreaker after head-to-head).

More after the jump…

To say certain games on the 49ers schedule are “must-win” is a rather purpose-less statement.  Yes they have to beat teams like the Rams and Lions.  However, the tougher games are necessary wins as well.  They may not win every game, but as far as most of us are concerned, they need to pile up as many wins as possible.  I know, Captain Obvious speaking.

At this point, I think it's safe to say that every game has become especially interesting, even the Lions and Rams could be high stress games if the playoffs are on the line.  But for now, let's take a look at the particularly interesting games outside the division.  We have had plenty of opportunities to talk about the Cardinals and the Seahawks after all.  More to come on that later in the season.

Week 11 @ Green Bay: It may be the first regular season matchup between Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers, but both teams find themselves battling for their playoff lives.  While the 49ers still have a decent enough chance to win the division, Green Bay is three games back of Minnesota, who swept the Packers.  The Packers are coming off an ugly, but huge, win over the Cowboys at Lambeau.

The 49ers have struggled tremendously against Green Bay in the recent past.  How much?  The Packers are 10-1 against the 49ers since January 1996, with the Young-to-TO game being the one victory.  Can the 49ers reverse course this weekend?  Road games are always tough, and heading to Lambeau, even if it's not frozen tundra, makes for a difficult battle.  The Packers have been rather inconsistent at times so the 49ers definitely have more than a puncher's chance.  We'll have plenty more on this battle all week long.

Week 12 vs. Jacksonville: I'll be honest, for much of this season I really did not think particularly highly of the Jaguars.  I don't know why, but they just never struck me as a team that would make much noise.  All of a sudden the Jaguars sit at 5-4, in spite of a 39 point scoring deficit on the season.  Aside from a 20-point victory over the Titans, the Jaguars have won games by 7, 3, 3 and 2 points.  They've beaten one good team (Houston) and they've lost to a bizarro Seahawks.  Suffice to say, I don't really know what to make of the Jaguars.

At this point, offensively the Jaguars are built primarily around the fire hydrant legs of Maurice Jones-Drew.  Normally that'd play to the 49ers advantage in rushing defense.  Of course, the Titans were built primarily around Chris Johnson and handled the 49ers.  So again, who really knows what to expect.  I suppose we can thank the lord it's a home game.

Week 15 @ Philadelphia: Last season the 49ers actually had a chance to spring a big upset of the Eagles.  Mike Martz decided to get cute on offense and the 49ers managed to blow a nine point 4th quarter lead, giving up 23 unanswered points to the Eagles.  Maybe the 49ers still would have lost the game with conservative play-calling, but I'll stick to my interpretation.

The Eagles have been a wildly inconsistent team this season, and it's a bit questionable how good they are.  At this point they're better than the 49ers, but they're still not impressing many people.  Their biggest win was a home win over the Giants that doesn't look nearly as impressive right now.  And any team that loses the Oakland Raiders?  Well, they definitely still have their work cut out for them.  Of course, that doesn't mean they'll be any easier for the 49ers to handle.  Of the 49ers remaining games, this is probably the least likely for them to win.

We all know the story by now. Brett Favre was mulling retirement and The Green Bay Packer's GM Ted Thompson basically wanted an answer yesterday about whether he would be returning. Favre decided to retire but soon wanted to come back. The Green Bay Packers had moved on with Aaron Rogers, so Favre wanted to be released. Ted Thompson looked into his crystal ball and apparently saw two defeats per season coming per year at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings if Brett Favre was in uniform for them. Long story short, after being treated very bad by Ted Thompson and the Green Bay Packers had their worst nightmare come true and then some. Favre is in a Minnesota Vikings uniform and has vengeance on his mind. He can say he does not, but I am sure the two victories against the Green Bay Packers are the two most savory of the year for him.

This game was hyped up all week. There were many people who believed the Green Bay Packers would prevail over the Minnesota Vikings because of being at home. The Packers also looked better head to head in several team categories. For many this would mark the true point of if the Packers made the right choice in their decision of dumping Brett Favre in Favor of Aaron Rogers. Favre answered that question for the second time of the season. Troy Aikman remarked during a pre-game show that it was the first time he can recall that much hype over a guy coming into the stadium just to warm up. I thought they did similar when Joe Montana went to Kansas City but that has been awhile so my memory is fuzzy.

The Green Bay Packers were owned by the Minnesota Vikings until well into the third quarter. The Packers then got lucky twice and threw very short Touchdown passes to Spencer Havner. They made it a ball game after that. It also did not help that the Vikings defense seemed to start breaking down, but in the end the best team won. I will give credit were credit is do though. Aaron Rogers did play a pretty good game. He completed 26/41 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He also had one fumble. What impressed me about him is that he kept the Vikings defense honest by showing his running abilities with 52 yards. He is probably one of the better running quarterbacks there is and is the best passer amongst the running quarterbacks. In all fairness he was running for his life at times since the Vikings nailed him six times for sacks including three by Jared Allen and another two by Ray Edwards. I am sure Aaron Rogers was saying to his linemen “you think you guys might want to block one of those guys sometime today” after he picked his rear end up off the ground. Their running game really did not do much like the last time they met. This is with the exception of a couple of lucky busted plays that Rogers scampered on.

Brett Favre ruled the field again for the Minnesota Vikings. I first have to give credit to his lineman as the Green Bay Packers were held without a sack. He completed 17/28 passes for 244 yards tying a career high with four touchdown passes and no picks. He moved around pretty comfortable in the pocket and picked the Packers apart. Many incompletions were receivers dropping the ball or not getting to a catchable pass. Adrian Peterson did not have a breakout day but played very well. He had 97 yards on 27 carriers and one touchdown. He held onto the ball this game and did not fumble it or get relieved of it like he did in the last meeting.

I wrote a previous article for their first meeting that you can read following the link to the left side. Many people thought I was nuts and the Green Bay Packers were going to win this game. It did not happen. If the Green Bay Packers had Brett Favre I believe they would have won that game. Regardless of the rest of the season I think Brett Favre made his point. I think they have a pretty good shot at a Super Bowl and would love to see them win it. I am a Ravens fan and only cheer for the Vikings because of how bad Brett Favre was treated by Green Bay. I would love to see the Vikings and Ravens in the Super Bowl and the best team wins. I would have to give that one to the Vikings but I think it would be a great close game. Ted Thompson needs to learn how to run a team. I wonder if Brett Favre would quote Toby Keith and say “How do ya like me now”.

Terrell Owens Signed by Buffalo Bills

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Sure, Kris Brown pulled a potentially game-tying field goal wide left as time expired in Indianapolis.

Sure, Matt Schaub went a second straight week without multiple touchdown passes.

And sure, there were 13 penalties called on the Texans. Some of those were flat-out mystifying.  I still don't know how Connor Barwin was offsides on an early call.  He sure didn't look like it on replay.

Let's not even mention the strange chain of events at the end of the first half when Ryan Moats fumbled on the 1-yard line. But this was not because of the refs.

(Quick side note: I have no idea why Schaub and Gary Kubiak decided to run the clock down to the two-minute warning instead of hurrying up to the line and running a play after the fumble.  I just don't get it. Why give the Colts time to see the replay and challenge the play?  Why?

I was screaming at the TV for the Texans to run a play.  When the game went to the two-minute warning, I knew the Colts would end up with the ball.  Somehow, I just knew.  Let's move on.  It's still too painful and it still doesn't make sense.)

Going back to the Brown kick, I will say that the snap and hold were nearly textbook.  Brown just pulled the ball left.  He knew it immediately.  I'm sure nobody is more upset about the miss than Brown is.

But the game should have never come down to a field goal to tie. A lot of people will blame Brown this week, but I don't think this game was about the kicker.  A lot of people will also blame Larry Tripplett, but I don't think the refs cost the Texans this game.

There were some positives.  The Texans' defense played fairly well.  Bernard Pollard snagged two interceptions, including one from Reggie Wayne.  The high-powered Colts scored only two touchdowns.

Steve Slaton didn't fumble (although Moats sure did) and Joel Dreessen played fairly well in replacing the injured Owen Daniels.  The Texans were able to move the ball and did a good job protecting Schaub against the fearsome Indianapolis pass rush.

The biggest problem that plagued the Texans was the sleepwalk that was the first 20 minutes or so of the game.  A quick three-and-out on offense.  Numerous stupid penalties.  A horrible throw by Schaub into triple coverage.  It seemed the Texans were not ready to play when the game started.

We can all agree that the Texans of years past would have laid down after falling behind early.  The Colts would never have been held to field goals instead of touchdowns.  The old Texans would have seen Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne running wild all over the field.

But, these Texans did hold the Colts to field goals.  Clark and Wayne did not cross the goal line.  The Texans did not lay down and were able to fight back.

The Texans are good enough to play with the Colts.  That's not debatable.  The Texans are not good enough to remain asleep for the first half.  That's neither debatable or acceptable.

In one of the most important games in franchise history, the Texans came out flat and lifeless.  Not many teams could spot the Colts nearly an entire half and still have a chance to win.

I wonder what could have happened if the Texans were not sleepwalking in the first half.

Teams lose games.  Even good teams lose.  But losing because you're not ready to play is inexcusable.  This game was not lost because of Brown's missed kick.  Houston lost because they were still asleep when the game started.  It's shameful.

Terrell Owens, one of the league's most controversial and talented wide receivers, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills. The Buffalo Bills website is now reporting the deal as signed.

Owen's deal is reportedly worth $6.5 million, with a $4 million signing bonus.

Owens signing with the Buffalo Bills comes as somewhat of a surprise. The Bills have a young, but not standout, quarterback in Trent Edwards. Edwards is a developing passer who has a chance to be very good. There aren't a significant number of other wide receiver threats on the Bills, however. Wide receiver Lee Evans leads the core, with Roscoe Parrish, Josh Reed, and James Hardy also part of the receiving core.

Though the team does not have a great passing and receiving core, Lee Evans should be able to see more single coverage. Evans, a talented wide receiver out of the University of Wisconsin, has played with a lot of opposite-side wide receivers. However, he has never truly flourished and demonstrated his top tier wide receiving skills.

Another reason why some are so surprised that Owens signed with the Bills, is because of Buffalo's small market. Philadelphia and Dallas were two major market teams, where he received an awful lot of camera time and press. Media attention will be around Buffalo much more often this season.

While Buffalo does not get a great amount of nationwide media attention, they have an incredibly dedicated fanbase—among the most dedicated in the entire National Football League. For the most part, the team has not had a dynamic offense for several years. With the signing of Owens, it should help their offense chug along, and makes them a true offensive threat in 2009.

It will be interesting to see how Terrell Owens performs in his debut for Buffalo.
